Skittles the kittles, asleep under the covers, post-valium injections. Why did she need valium, you ask? Well…
Lemme preface this by saying Kittles has been giving herself what can only be called a redneck haircut. It’s hard to photograph, so you’ll have to take my word on this. She’s basically licked/shaved her sides and undercarriage as far as she can reach, effectively giving herself some sort of unholy cat mohawk.
One word: flea-zees.
So as any responsible pet owner would do, I gave her a flea bath with that flea shampoo bidnezz on thursday. On saturday, we decided to give her hartz flea drops for cats like we always do. These are the over the counter, store-bought ones that look like this, but with a cat on the front.
Five hours later, we had a kitten doing her best Michael J Fox-in-the-arctic impersonation, or what I lovingly referred to as the harlem shakes. This was after midnight, so our only option was to rush her to the 24 hour vet and hope to the heavens we didn’t severely break our cat.
As soon as we walked through the door, the doctor on hand grabbed her and knew straightaway what happened. Hartz flea medicine poisoning. After giving her a good scrub down with regular dawn soap and water, she gave her two (!) injections of valium to calm the convulsions, and a subcutaneous injection of fluids to help metabolize (and excrete) the medicine from her system. Because there is no “antidote”. 300 bucks later, we’re on our way back home with an exhausted, tiny, scared, trembling, punctured, drugged little kitten.
After doing only one search about this, I landed on the site HartzVictims.org that has been pushing to get these drops off the shelves for years. Let me reiterate that this was a proper dosage of the hartz medication that fucked her up. Skittles is still shaking off the poisoning’s effects, but she’ll be fine. Luckily.
We learned our lesson the hard way, but it coulda been a lot worse. Don’t ever use these drops on your pets.

Wow! That’s good to know. Glad the kitty’s OK!

Voops! You found me! Good to hear from you my man.
Yeah, it was a mess. After the vet took her to the back, she says “we haven’t had a cat die [from the poisoning] yet.”
Which, when you haven’t even thought of death as an option, sounds pretty fucking scary for a “reassurance.”
How have you been? Host any radio shows lately?

I’ve been following you for a while via RSS…like the new design. A friend recently moved to Plano and I directed him here since you post about local stuff occasionally.
No radio lately. Don’t know when that’s going to come around again, if ever. I don’t like working commercial radio at all, and there’s not many other options around here.
“Yet.” Yeah, some reassurance!

Yikes.
