Call it internet-induced attention deficit disorder, but I’m not really the sort to pore through a multi-paged story online. This one, on the other hand, had me from the get go. Just really damn interesting. It’s the story of Evan Ratliff, a writer who tried to completely vanish while readers were challenged to find him.

This is for anyone who’s ever pondered how difficult/possible/scary/fun it would be to skip town without a trace. How do you prepare? Where do you go? How do you stay off the grid?

I think the best part of this story is how ingenious the “hunters” were in their resourcefulness and tech savvy.

My First Impressions of Google Wave

So my cohort Greggy “LiquidNight” Gregorson (“it’s a doors reference”) sent me a wave asking me my initial thoughts on it. When I realized I was typing far too much for one man to absorb alone, I decided to pop it into a post.

This, by the way, is just my general summation on Wave’s purpose and implications from my point of view. I’m not gonna get into detail on usage, tips, or downsides here. There’s tons of that out there already. See bottom of this post for links to more in-depth articles. Here we go!

So far, I like it. As far as it being “cool”, it’s about as interesting as a multi-user editor/communication tool can be. You won’t get the full benefit until you’re collabing with others. It’s not a fancy new toy so much as simply where I think we’re headed. It’s just what comes next; documents that are alive and always changing. The only thing sexy in all of this is the power of an invite-only system. And google knows how to leverage that better than anyone.

I feel as though we’re eventually going to see email like we currently see printed media or pen and paper notes. Static, dead, never to be edited again. Don Draper would say “no one ever framed a wave” but he’s an identity thief, so ignore him.

Anyway, the real power of wave is in its interoperability. It has the potential to be your central hub from which everything else flows. Knottek linked me in a wave to an already active twitter extension called “twave,” but I don’t post much of anything to twitter, so I haven’t tried it. Let us know if you have.

Wave’s other strength is its flexibility. It can do or be whatever you make of it. Did you know you can embed waves in your site? That means all the things that you can easily pop into a wave are available instantly wherever you want them. Polls, videos, maps, and of course, if your wave is public, anyone can edit and talk with one another wherever you embed it.

There’s a lot of potential here. It’s really just going to be what you make of it that dictates whether or not it’ll be useful for you. How do you plan on using wave, if at all?
